Aspiring Leaders Program

About

The Aspiring Leaders Program is a development opportunity for leaders who wish to improve their ability to lead and manage their direct reports. Through a variety of learning mediums, the program builds over five in-class learning days and two online coaching sessions. Participants will have the opportunity to develop a variety of leadership skills. The skills will centre around owning communication as a leader in everyday interactions, performance improvement, dealing with conflict and presenting to an audience. These are essential skills for the modern leader to be confident and proficient in the workplace.

This course is open to anyone working in the local government sector and will be of particular interest to:

  • Aspiring leaders
  • High potentials
  • New managers

LG Professionals, NSW membership is included when you purchase the Non-Member rate and membership is valid till June 2025.

Program Outline

Session 1:  Managing and Leading Yourself  (In-Class Learning Day) 
The outcome for this session is to clarify leadership and management, and insight into your leadership style, the team dynamics, and how to be aware and confident to deal with a range of conflict styles.

Understanding the team dynamics 
Different styles to manage conflict

Session 2:  Being a Leader of Communication  (In-Class Learning Day)
The outcome for this session is to understand communication through our actions, develop a method to be a flexible communicator using our behaviour and identify what motivates ourselves and our team to maximise their performance.

Motivating staff – extrinsic, intrinsic, coercive
Situational Leadership e.g. Directing, Coaching, Supporting and Delegating 
Matching Leadership Styles to Developmental Needs
Understanding our communication preferences (DiSC Communication Styles)
Observing communication in others, and being a flexible communicator

Session 3:  Small Group Coaching and Senior Leaders of the LG Community Session (Online Webcast)
Senior Leaders of the LG Community: In this session, we will invite several senior leaders from the local government community to discuss what traits they look for in their upcoming leaders.  What do they look for when hiring and promoting leaders within their organisation and important lessons they have learnt from their own leadership journey.

Coaching: Participants will have the chance to ask questions of their facilitator and reflect on their development to date, discuss any challenges and how they are tracking with the implementation of the learning material.

Session 4:  Managing Performance and Development  (In-Class Learning Day)
The outcome for this session is to clarify expectations for high performing habits, associated consequences and to explore the processes for identifying and addressing performance problems and give feedback clearly with a method that supports good decision making from the recipient.

Exploring the impact of unclear expectations on performance and culture
Articulating what high performance looks like
What are consequences, are we more comfortable with positive consequences as opposed to negative ones
Method to deliver all feedback and when we should give feedback
Craft an opening that is forward, honest, clear and how to engage and ask questions
Documenting and planning the follow-up meetings

Session 5:  Growing my Emotional Intelligence and Stress Management  (In-Class Learning Day)
The outcome for this session is to develop a leader's self-awareness and ability to respond positively in all situations and to develop their effectiveness and leadership skills. Participants will become more aware and able to identify stressors and align and adapt, to grow, develop and thrive in their roles.  

Define emotional intelligence (EQ)
Learn the five core skills required to practice emotional intelligence
Using a system to build my emotionally intelligent response
Recognising and identifying stress triggers
Learn how to design your day to support your natural energy and optimum performance 

Session 6:  Small Group Coaching and Senior Leaders of the LG Community Session (Online Webcast)
Senior Leaders of the LG Community: In this session, we will invite several people leaders and human resource professionals from the local government community to discuss what communication traits high performing leaders and managers share and the importance of giving feedback. Through their experience what have they identified that all participants can learn from.

Coaching: Participants will have the chance to ask questions of their facilitator and reflect on their development to date, discuss any challenges and how they are tracking with the implementation of the learning material.

Session 7: Engaging and Influencing Others  (In-Class Learning Day)
The outcome for this session is to help leaders engage and influence a greater number of stakeholders both internally and externally to council, and the ability to develop and deliver presentations within an organisation for a range of purposes.

Consider who you are trying to influence and what are the barriers to engaging and influencing them
The factors that influence
Identifying personal strengths to influencing
Prepare and deliver a presentation utilising appropriate formats, strategies, material and resources

Session 8: Next Gen Conference and Graduation Dinner  (In-Class Learning Day)
