Domestic Delegation NSW 2026

Through our Delegation programs, we have consistently observed the profound engagement and invaluable learning experiences that participants gain from visiting and experiencing projects in various local government areas. Participants frequently comment on how inspirational and beneficial it is to visit these projects, as well as to hear directly from senior leadership teams about their strategic choices in creating sustainable and thoughtful infrastructure that aligns with community needs and goals.

Building on the success of these initiatives, we are excited to offer a similar opportunity with our Delegation to NSW. This program is designed to facilitate sharing information and best practise on projects within our local government community. Participants will have the unique chance to interact with senior leadership teams, gain insights into innovative projects, and experience first-hand the impactful work being done to meet community aspirations. By participating in the Delegation to NSW, professionals can broaden their perspectives, exchange ideas, and bring back valuable knowledge to their own organisations, ultimately contributing to the advancement of sustainable and community-focused infrastructure.

Delegation to NSW 2026

Program

The projects we undertake for our communities share both unique and common elements with those of other councils, highlighting the importance of industry-wide collaboration to enhance best practices. By delving into the nuances of each project, including the decision-making processes, challenges, and successes, we can ensure that local government continues to thrive.

This immersive and collaborative learning experience allows individuals to explore recent and innovative projects from other councils. Engaging with senior leaders to share insights gained from these projects and how they have met their communities' aspirations, both anticipated and unexpected, enhances our professional experience and benefits the communities we serve.

"We should mutually teach and learn from each other, without shame or pride." - Fukuzawa Yukichi

Time  Description
09:30 AM

Depart the Star Sydney hotel.

Today, we will be visiting two councils.

10:30 AM Arrive Wollongong City Council

Our first visit will be with Wollongong to hear how Wollongong City Council successfully hosted the 2022 UCI Road World Championships and 2025 World Triathlon Championship Finals, and explore how these events translated into tangible outcomes for their community. Through candid reflections and practical examples, the executive team will share their journey from event concept to delivery.  Discussion with the executive team includes: building a compelling value proposition, engaging internal and external stakeholders, managing risk and governance, and aligning the event with long-term place and community priorities, demonstrating how purposeful leadership can convert an ambitious idea into community benefit.

Executive debrief: hear the full story from Wollongong City Council’s executive team, from initial decision-making to delivery and lessons learned
Bidding and benefits: unpack the bid process, key success factors, partnerships, and the economic and social value of hosting
Infrastructure and readiness: learn what upgrades were required (or accelerated) across venues and sites, and how investment decisions were prioritised
On-site learning: visit locations with visible outcomes or revitalisation and connect project choices to what changed on the ground

This visit will contain practical insights into winning and delivering major event bids in a local government context; proven approaches to stakeholder engagement, partnerships, and governance that support confident decision-making; exploring community value and measuring outcomes beyond event day; and real-world examples of place-based upgrades and revitalisation linked to event-led investment, along with transferable leadership lessons you can apply to projects in your own community.

1:30 PM Depart Wollongong
2:30 PM Arrive Sutherland Shire Council
Our second visit will be with Sutherland Shire Council will explore two projects that highlight how Council is delivering infrastructure that balances community expectation, technical complexity, and long-term value. The leadership team will share how projects are prioritised, governed, and communicated, bringing to life the decisions, trade-offs, and partnerships required to move from strategy to delivery while maintaining trust and momentum across the organisation and community.

Kirrawee Library is a flexible, innovative community space within the South Village precinct designed for collaboration, study, children’s learning and creative production including innovative community space, packed with features for musicians, filmmakers, content creators, performers and artists
Seymour Shaw Park is a highly utilised sports and recreation precinct in the heart of Miranda. The Seymour Shaw Park Masterplan is being delivered in stages to upgrade and revitalise local facilities. Stage 1, now complete, introduced a modern youth precinct with inclusive features such as a half basketball court, parkour and climbing elements, a children’s playground, and a top-tier skate plaza, alongside a new accessible carpark on Wandella Road. Stage 2, which is currently underway, focuses on redeveloping the sporting facilities with new multi-use playing fields for netball, soccer and cricket, improved spectator seating, and a new clubhouse and amenities building, with completion expected in August 2026.
Stakeholder and community engagement: approaches to consultation, communication, and expectation management for two very different projects
Delivery in a live environment: managing disruption, safety, approvals, and interfaces with operations while keeping projects moving
Benefits and legacy: how Council defines success, tracks benefits, and ensures projects translate into enduring community value

This visit will provide practical insights into leading complex, community-facing projects in local government; effective governance and risk practices that support confident decision-making; and transferable approaches to engagement, that can be applied to participants own council and community.
